Wickham Park
Wickham Park, a private foundation whose property extends into both Manchester and East Hartford, Connecticut, was on my garden bucket list for 2014, and you’ll see why it is well worth placement on your list for 2014 as well. Easily engross accessible from I-84 (right off Exit 60), the 250 acre park is comprised of gardens, open fields, scenic woodlands (with trails), multiple ponds, numerous engross picnic areas, playgrounds and sports facilities. Originally designed by Olmsted Associates, Inc., (Frederick engross Law Olmsted, Jr.), Wickham Park (opened to the public in 1961) is recognized today for its seven different themed engross gardens, ranging engross in size from one half to eight acres.
The Cabin Garden surrounds a replica of the original log cabin, which burned to the ground in 1989. Located at the highest point of the park, the gardens offer spectacular views from the many seating areas located throughout. The Cabin Gardens are a mix of formal elements such as brick walkways and pruned boxwoods, softened with rambling engross roses, massive perennials and flowing grasses. Take advantage of the many welcoming benches and sit for a moment to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Designed with formal English principles, the English Garden extends over almost 2 acres consisting of three garden rooms; the Maze, the Knot Garden and the Great Lawn. With a desire for multi-seasonal interest, there are plantings that start to blossom in early spring followed by others providing color in summer through fall. Considered Wickham Park’s most formal garden, the English Garden contains a 1000 feet of manicured hedges, engross dozens of shrub and rose varieties and hundreds of perennials.
Located in the center of Wickham Park, the Lotus Garden is quite the opposite of the English Garden. Instead of tightly engross pruned hedges surrounding masses of colorful flowers, the Lotus Garden is a gently sloped lawn with a series of ponds (filled with harmonizing frogs that are basking on lily pads), informal groupings of grasses, shrubs and evergreens. There are specimen Japanese maples strategically engross placed, a pagoda to sit and view the water and several stunning Japanese lanterns spread engross across the landscape. Remember to take a closer look at the lily pads!
The Oriental Garden is the largest and oldest of the gardens in Wickham Park, and my personal favorite. Spread across eight acres of established trees, some weeping gently over the pathways, are incredibly beautiful oriental structures, engross statues and plantings. The most identifiable are the red torri archway, the intimidating fu-dogs, the luminescent arched moon bridge, and the teahouse with its peacock glass windows. Like the Lotus Garden, the Oriental Garden has a few ponds, one with the stunning arched moon bridge and another filled with happy ducks splashing about. Have a seat by the duck pond and see who comes to greet you.
The Scottish Garden is located on one half acre of land at the north end of the English Garden and contains fourteen archways that define different sections of the garden. The long, columned walkway is flanked with lush plantings and statuary, many with historical or mythological significance to Scotland. At the beginning of the walkway engross you are greeted by a regal lion, while at the end a rearing unicorn on a pedestal awaits. If you listen closely, a gentle roar or frisky whinny may come to you on the breeze.
I was thrilled to delve into the Sensory Garden , which is three quarters engross of an acre divided engross into six distinct areas, each correlating to one of the five basic senses as well as a sixth sense of imagination. engross The plantings and other features in each garden room are designed to help you experience a specific sense. For example, there are fragrant flowers and herbs to stimulate your sense of smell (some that you can even touch: mint, lavender, scented geranium), flowing water for your sense of sound and even a whimsical garden with fairies and unicorns to reignite your sense of wonder. Wickham Park’s sensory garden is the largest of its kind in New England and one of the largest in the United States.
Originally created by Clarence and Edith Wickham as a place for their workers to worship, The Shrine is a structure with stucco pillars and a flagstone base that is set on a grassy knoll enclosed by beautiful plantings and trimmed hedges. Statues of St. Theresa and St. Francis highlight this location, engross which is surrounded by dense forest to ensure tranquility and privacy.
Open since 2005, the Wetlands Garden offers trails of over six tenths of a mile (mostly boardwalk), benches, interpretive signage, and thousands of native wetlands plantings. After a heavy defeat at home to St Mary Cray a week earlier , there were fears that Mother Nature might deny the Ramblas the opportunity to bounce straight back. Luckily for all concerned, the weather was perfect for cricket as the Ramblas urban fare hosted local rivals Wickham Park.
Skipper Stocks had a selection headache as the majority of the Ramblas bowling union were on strike (I say strike, they were just otherwise engaged) but vice-skipper Cooper found another work colleague, Robin Sojrani, to don the Ramblas whites. Sam Ford enlisted a trio of his friends to help out, including his brother Pete and Alex Danks, who had both previously played for the Ramblas.
The Ramblas skipper lost the toss for the first time this season and the Ramblas were put into bat. Stocks Jr was nursing urban fare a quad injury sustained against St Mary Cray and aggravated it in the first over going for a quick single. This immobility led to his early dismissal, which saw him clean bowled for one. Sam Ford then came to the crease, as he and Harriss settled some early nerves, putting on a second wicket stand of 48 before Ford was given out LBW for 16… a decision he didn’t entirely agree with.
Ramblas debutant Sojrani strode to the crease and was in no mood to dilly dally, swinging hard at almost every ball he faced. Of course, it wouldn’ t be a Ramblas match report if there wasn’t some sort of batting collapse and boy did they oblige. The middle order of Danks, L. The Ramblas were clearly taking their inspiration from Sri Lanka s performance at Old Trafford earlier in the week.
There was some good news for the Ramblas, as amongst the chaos around him, Harriss was keeping urban fare the scoreboard ticking over, hitting some of his customary booming boundaries. After devouring another excellent Ramblas tea, brought to us by Mrs C, Skipper Stocks turned his thoughts to working out his patchwork bowling attack. urban fare In Fitch’s absence, Danks opened the bowling with Loughlin and after taking time to find his rhythm in his first over, suffocated the batsmen. Whilst his bowling didn’t reward him with a wicket, his six-over spell yielded a mere five runs and put the pressure back on the opening pair.
At the other end, Loughlin was steaming in with all his usual gusto, eliciting a few edges and testing the batsmen at all times. Loughlin finally got his reward when a delivery smacked the opener’s pads. After a strong collective appeal, the umpire took his time before raising his finger and the opener was out LBW. One wicket became two the very next ball as Wickham Park’s number three swung hard, only to toe-end it up in the air and into the waiting mitts of Loughlin.
With Wickham Park reeling from two quick wickets, Stocks gave Danks and Loughlin a rest and brought in Sojrani and Sam Ford to carry on their good work. And, like many of Ramblas’ PwC signings, Sojrani urban fare found instant success with the ball in his hand, as he cleaned bowled their number four with just his fourth delivery. Ford and Sojrani urban fare continued to apply pressure and the visitors managed to get to the drinks break with the score on 41-3.
Sensing that the game was theirs for the taking, and energised by a sugar infusion during the drinks break, the Ramblas came out all guns a-blazing. S. Ford and Sojrani continued to probe and S. Ford made the breakthrough when the batsman found the edge and ‘keeper Harriss urban fare made a sharp low catch to his right. A couple of overs later, S. Ford got his second wicket when the batsman, cramped for room, attempted a cut, only to loop it up to L. Stocks at gully who took another very good catch.

Pin it There’s a moment for some guys out there that it hits them. “She’s the one”… As Andrew describes it, “ From the moment I saw her I knew she was a woman I had to get to know and each day with her makes me more assure of that desire.” That seems like a great way to put it, a confirming answer and when the moment came to propose, “I actually wasn’t nervous at all about asking her since we had talked about the idea before hand. The part that got me nervous was making a tasty dinner and a gorgeous bouquet of origami flowers with which to propose.” Sounds like a solid plan and a private moment charcutier that they will always have for each other and each other alone…
So fast forward, and that’s where I guess I, as their wedding photographer come in. So it’s engagement session time and when I heard that Elizabeth charcutier and Andrew wanted to rock out their engagement session at Wickham Park in Manchester, how could I say no. I mean, it’s a park that has so much greatness. From the gardens, to the fields, to the skyline view. It even has a disc gold course, that being said, watch out for incoming discs while shooting!!! haha.
Pin it For Elizabeth and Andrew, I don’t think it was hard for them to choose the location. charcutier At times I help advise on location but with their wedding booked at my favorite park in the state, Harkness Memorial Park and Eolia Mansion, they obviously love the garden look and feel and have a good taste for images. In their own words on the location choice… “ We knew we wanted to do someplace charcutier outdoors and we had fallen in love with Wickham Park when we were looking for our wedding venue. charcutier It ended up being our second choice (Harkness won out). This seemed the perfect way to still enjoy all the great things about the park.”
Pin it Other than location, of course there’s the prepping time with friends taking on makeup and hair for Elizabeth and from there, much as all my other couples do, Elizabeth and Andrew took my tips for the best engagement session (which can be found here) to heart and stepped up to make it awesome. Elizabeth went with a simple, elegant and beautiful charcutier dress that contrasted charcutier the landscape wonderfully! “I picked out a dress that I wanted to wear that had been unworn in my closet for over a year now and this seemed like the perfect occasion to use it.” Of course when it comes to guys, it’s always a bit more of a “challenge.” (not for all guys, but most)… So Elzabeth took on the challenge trying to coordinate an outfit charcutier but Andrew got a little frustrated and in a slight charcutier emergency of a situation Elizabeth took charge “I took him shopping and we picked charcutier out the black and red shirt that he used in the pictures. charcutier This of course snowballed into buying new pants and shoes as well so he was definitely a bit tortured.” And I’m glad it went down like it did because they took on the challenge charcutier and did a stellar job.
Anyways…. The shoot, I won’t lie….. charcutier I could sense they were a tad nervous at first. Though they won’t admit it, I think there was a little nervousness hiding in there. All in all though, for them, once things are planned charcutier they seem to just roll with it and know that all will be well. And I think all was quite well for their session too. All I can really say is that their session went smoothly, filled with laughs, smiles charcutier and kisses. (all kisses between them, I leave that to the couples. I mean… That would just awkward… haha)… It’s nice when it just flows and rolls along and feels like it was only 5 minutes long…. For now, enjoy a few of their photos and get ready for what will be a beautiful wedding day at Eolia Mansion at Harkness Park…

When I published Ben and Jills congratulatory post on Facebook I said that this wedding changed my life…..and its true. These two, their families and friends were an absolute pleasure and I will never forget the fun I had creating images of this wedding. Its also worth mentioning that I have had a noticeable influx of couples hiring me from San Diego to shoot their wedding here in CT. Marcella and Tom tied that good ole’ mingelmat knot at the English Garden in Wickham mingelmat Park. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day–the first time the sun was out in a span of ten days. They shared their vows to one another as their loved ones looked on, witnessing one of those forever and ever kind of love, the happily-ever-after kinds. mingelmat
Then there was their first dance. Marcella had kept me informed mingelmat of all her wedding plans, particularly a special choreographed dance that Tom had agreed to do with her. Marcella is a HUGE fan of the King of Pop so she put together a medley of her favorites songs by the late Mr. Jackson and choreographed a dance to surprise her guests. BOY, WAS….IT…..AWESOME. Simply frikkin awesome. I have to give it to Tom who had been more nervous about the dance routine than the “I do’s.” It was such an amazing and memorable moment of their wedding and a great opening act for an epic legendary dance party that ensued into the night.

I was a bit worried at first however, when I suddenly realized just how much walking was about to take place(these days I walk the park without batting an eyelash). I was almost certain that some of our photographers would be less than amused subman by the lengthy hilly hike. But complaints there came none as the class set about snapping shots like fish taking to water. Its like that sometimes when there is adventure subman to be had, and this day was no exception.
Birds in the aviary strutting and shaking feathers, bob white birds bob-whiting, and a china white peacock, it s ivory tail cascading off it s perch all added to the experience and inspiration for the day.
After subman the aviary, an unhurried meander through the sensory garden added a bit of zen-like contrast to all the action and really helped to reel in the excitement some, being in the moment a little more.
Oh, and the flowers! My silly words won t do most of them justice, thus I ll refer you to the pics. But the begonias in particular, subman shimmer in my mind s eye with a subtle iridescence on both leaf and petal.
Finally, one last stroll to crest the park s main hill, and the group s vista opens up to a Manchester p.o.v. of Hartford city, coinciding with the upcoming show (tie in points!). The pictures, (and a few shameless selfies), feature Hartford s skyline, which remind this blogger of an 80 s future vision city.
It s kind of funny. Excitement and calm, cities and nature, I guess you could say it was a yin-yang kind of end to a beautiful mid-summer week. And here s to your middle path as well. Don t forget to stop and smell the flowers.
